Use the S.L.A.M Method To Spot Phishing Attempts
Sender
Verify the email address. Look closely at the sender's email address. Watch out for subtle misspellings or unusual domain names that mimic legitimate ones.
Links
Hover before you click. Hover over any links to see the actual URL. Ensure it matches the expected destination and looks legitimate.
Attachments
Beware of unexpected files. Be cautious of any attachments, especially if they are unexpected. Scammers often use attachments to deliver malware or viruses.
Message
Examine the content of the message carefully. Thanks to advancements in AI, poor punctuation and broken English are a think of the past. Look for urgent language, or requests for personal information. Legitimate companies won't ask for sensitive information via email.
Use a unique password for every system and / or website.
Passwords should be at least 8 characters long, but 15 characters is even better for stronger security.
Passwords should include a mix of uppercase, lowercase letters, numbers, and punctuation, or be a passphrase with words separated by punctuation (e.g., Help-Desk-Melt-4). To avoid dictionary attacks, use mixed case and punctuation in passphrases
Don't share your passwords with co-workers.
Don't save your passwords in your web browser. Use a reputable password manager. We recommend Keeper Security (see Helpful Links above)
Try our password generator. Select from either Passphrase or Randomized Password, the set the length. For Passphrases, the length will be how many words are in the passphrase. For Randomized Passwords the length will be how many characters are in the password. Play around with the settings and click the Generate button when you want it to create a password for you. If you don’t like the first password it generates, click Generate until it creates a password you like. You’re welcome to come back and use the tool any time you’d like as many times as you’d like.
